This exercise allows children to develop their collecting and categorising skills.

Resources

Metal spoons, coins, paper, clips, scissors, a wooden ruler, a piece of cork, a variety of different sized magnets

Step by step

* Lay out a selection of familiar objects, such as those listed above, on a tray.

* Allow the children to experiment with the magnets, and see which objects can and can't be picked up by them.

* Support the children by joining in with the activity and helping them learn the correct terms for describing what the magnets do, for example, 'attract'.
