Parents of a child with Down syndrome have developed a range of educational apps for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
Colin and Beverley Dean launched Special iApps as a non-profit social enterprise. Mr Dean said, ‘A lot of apps include distracting sounds and animations. If you have autism or Down syndrome, these apps give you sensory overload.
‘It might keep kids occupied and entertained but it doesn’t actually teach them anything and, for some, it’s totally overwhelming and they don’t know what they are supposed to be doing.’
The couple received a £3,000 grant from social enterprise charity UnLtd, which allowed them to develop a range of apps including Special Stories, Special Numbers and Special Words Pro.
