Viking women will take centre stage at the 2019 Jorvik Viking Festival in York on 20-27 February.
The 2019 event will give families the opportunity to hear stories of Viking women ‘beyond the homestead’ through the voices of seers, queens and shield maidens.
Children and families will be able to enjoy presentations and displays throughout the week, including the Best Beard and Strongest Viking Competitions, and will line the streets for the parade of hundreds of warriors.
The annual event drew more than 63,000 visitors in 2018.
Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, said, ‘We have some superb source material in the sagas, which enable us to tell stories of exploration, settlement, conquest, magic and nobility from the perspective of powerful women.’
