The magic fish

Once upon a time, there was a fisherman and his wife. They lived in a little, old, tumbledown hut by the sea. The roof was leaking and the windows were cracked. There were holes in the wall, and the wind whistled through the gaps. And they had no money to repair it. Every day, the man would go down to the sea to catch fish to sell at the market, but he had not caught any fish for days and his wife was cross with him. Wearily, he sat by the sea, hoping to catch something.

At last, he felt a tug on his line. He pulled it up, and there on the end was the biggest and most beautiful fish he had ever seen. Imagine his surprise when the fish spoke to him!

'If you let me go, I will give you whatever you want,' said the fish.

The man thought for a long time, then replied, 'It would make my wife very happy if we had a warm, little house, with a good, strong roof.'
