Environmental print and shared writing are just some of the ways to support children as they develop an awareness of the written word Practitioners need to understand children's growing awareness of the written word and know how to support and develop that understanding. Window 1: a growing awareness of print

Children will be aware of the meaning of some print, for example:

* logos like McDonald's, Coca-Cola or Bob the Builder

* their own names in a familiar context, like on a placemat or coat peg
