Toolkit launch aids children's centre moves

The National Day Nurseries Association has launched a support kit to help local authorities develop children's centres. The good practice guidance was compiled via ten nationwide networks set up last year by the NDNA to encourage partnerships between local authorities and private day nurseries (News, 8 September 2005). The networks included representatives from Sure Start regional staff, health workers and JobCentre Plus, as well as day nurseries and local authorities.

Findings from network working groups form the basis of the series of ten guidance notes and five briefing notes, which will be sent to every local authority in England as they are published. They include contacts and case studies. The first three are: Ensuring sustainability in Sure Start Children's Centres; Community engagement in Sure Start Children's Centres; and a briefing note about how Worcestershire Early Years and Childcare Service involved private providers in developing children's centres.

Patricia Jackson, head of regional development for NDNA said, 'This kit will give local authorities a tangible resource to help them.'
