Get on track for developing skills and using materials in progressive stages by making trains, says Lena Engel Area of learning:

Learning intention:

Build and construct with a range of objects, selecting appropriate resources, and adapting their work where necessary Children should be offered lots of practice in building models using a range of resources. Adults can provide the crucial support to help children learn to use materials in a constructive and imaginative way and to think creatively to solve problems and amend designs.

A series of activities based on constructing trains can demonstrate the progressive development of children's skills in designing and making.

Rows and rows

Children with little experience may never have travelled on a train but are likely to know about them through pictures, stories and toys.
