Trojans' Birthday bash

(Photograph) - Children, staff and parents at The Trojans Scheme have a year of celebrations ahead to mark its tenth anniversary. The charity running out-of-school services in south London launched in January 1995 as the result of a joint parent and staff initiative at Eardley Primary School, Streatham, to address a severe shortage of out-of-school facilities. This first site continues to be a national model.

The charity running out-of-school services in south London launched in January 1995 as the result of a joint parent and staff initiative at Eardley Primary School, Streatham, to address a severe shortage of out-of-school facilities. This first site continues to be a national model.

Now Trojans provides breakfast, after-school and holiday activities to 14 schools and more than 2,300 children use the services each week.

Trojans director and co-founder Jackie Nunns (pictured) said, 'When I became a mother I realised the lack of facilities for children. The idea of the community using school resources by setting up a self-funding voluntary organisation seemed an obvious one. I couldn't understand why it hadn't been done before and am always astonished when people think it's a groundbreaking initiative.
