Young engineers build Hot Rod for disabled brother

Three pupils from a West Midlands school have been named as the UK Young Engineers of the Year.

The trio, who are all pupils at Old Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge, won the prestigious award for building a full-size Hot Rod car from scratch for a disabled youngster.

Rogan McGilp, 16, Stuart Chau, 17, and Ethan Dunbar-Baker, 15, built the 14-foot car for Rogan’s 13-year-old wheelchair-bound brother David.

The boys built the car in three months, in between revising for exams. They got the chance to showcase their project, known as David’s Wheels, at the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair in Birmingham last month.

“David’s Wheels is not just about building a car for my brother,” said Rogan. “We hope this will help to change people’s perceptions about what’s possible for disabled people to do.
