Nursery World Show 2017: It’s showtime!

Following last year’s successful event, we look ahead to what you can expect to find at the Nursery World Show 2017, held over two days on 3 and 4 February at London’s Business Design Centre

More than 100 exhibitors will be on hand at the show on 3 and 4 February to help you keep up to date about the latest products, services and resources, and to discuss your requirements. Many are offering special show discounts and competitions.

EQUIPMENT

CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT

The group is especially interested in speaking with practitioners about the roles available at its 38 London nurseries.

Staff Match is offering reduced fees of 8 per cent to nursery managers and owners for a first placement.

SERVICES

Fish Childcare Insurance will exhibit its new childminder insurance for the first time ever at the Nursery World Show – it has been providing specialist insurance to children and adults since 1975. The dedicated childminder policy from Fish not only incorporates extensive public liability and employer liability insurance, but also a host of legal cover benefits. The policy includes access to free documentation including contracts, record sheets and activity charts. Visit the stand to pick up free goodies and merchandise.

The School Renovation Company provides design and build services, as well as internal and external refurbishments. It has a special ‘price beat’ offer for visitors to the exhibition. It is also running ‘The Fantastic Where’s Alfie Competition’ – locate Alfie on the SRC stand and win an Instant Outdoor Classroom, including artificial grass, Toad Stool Seats and Toad Stool Table for your setting.

ORGANISATIONS

show7Early Education will be offering complimentary copies of its Nursery World award-winning book to anyone taking out individual membership at its stand. Every Child a Mover: A practical guide to providing young children with the physical opportunities they need by Jan White won the Nursery World Award category for Professional Books in 2016. The book was part of the inspiration for the Outdoors and Active project run jointly by Early Education and Learning Through Landscapes for the London Borough of Newham, about which Julie Mountain will be delivering a seminar at the show. Publications by other seminar presenters including Stella Louis and Kay Mathieson will also be available.

show8The Pre-school Learning Alliance will be flagging up its Fair Future Funding campaign, calling on the Government to ensure that early years funding keeps pace with the rising cost of delivering places. You can find out more and sign up as a supporter, as well as talk to the alliance about membership benefits and buying its books.

The NUT is the largest teacher’s union representing classroom teachers, head teachers and senior school leaders. Membership of the NUT is open to everyone who holds qualified teacher status, including Early Years Teacher Status.

NUTRITION AND HEALTH

show9Oral Health Foundation will show how you can make a positive difference by teaching oral health. The charity will be promoting its dedicated oral health programme, Dental Buddy, and offering guidance on how best to integrate and explore oral health in the classroom, with specific resources for the early years. It will also be talking about nursery initiative Brush Time, a programme to advise staff on how they can help children to brush their teeth properly.

LIVE THEATRE

show12The Nursery World Show 2017 has a great array of free presentations for visitors in the Live Theatre on the exhibition floor.

These presentations, delivered by leading suppliers and providers, will take place at the centre of the show throughout both days and will demonstrate best practice as well as new developments. The line-up includes Action for Children, BNG Training, the Communication Trust, Mine Conkbayir, the EYN Partnership and LEYF.

EQUIPMENT & PLAY ZONE

This new zone will offer the opportunity to browse the latest innovative equipment for both indoor and outdoor play environments from expert suppliers including Hand Made Places and Feelgood Designs.

CPD AT THE SHOW

There is a fantastic line-up of half-day masterclasses and hour-long seminars, all led by top early years experts.

MASTERCLASSES

show13The vital theme of supporting disadvantaged children and ‘closing the gap’ is at the forefront on 3 and 4 February. On Friday, Professors C Cybele Raver and Clancy Blair from New York University will be presenting ‘Closing the gap three to five: self-regulation’, along with Dr Julian Grenier.

They will examine different aspects of children’s brains and the path to self-regulation, and the case for play-based pedagogy. Professor Raver will also look at self-regulation and the home environment, drawing on lessons from the Chicago School Readiness Project. Dr Grenier will then talk about self-regulation and its implications for best practice in the EYFS.

The Masterclass will run from 9.30-12.30 on 3 February.

On Saturday, Dr Danielle Matthews, Penny Tassoni and Alice Sharp will lead ‘Closing the gap birth to three: language development’.

Dr Matthews will present the latest research findings about language development, language delay and links to socio-economic status, plus a session on contingent talk; Ms Tassoni will look at enriching language and experience across the curriculum; and Ms Sharp will talk about early language and the foundations of literacy.

This Masterclass is from 9.30-12.30 on 4 February.

SEMINARS

A packed seminar programme features themes from across the EYFS, with speakers including Dr Kay Mathieson, Sue Overton, Judith Twani, Martin Pace, Dr Lala Manners, Stella Louis, Penny Tassoni, Julie Mountain and Alice Sharp.

Subjects include maths, literacy, photography, woodwork, planning, observation and assessment, digital technology, behaviour, self-regulation, outdoors, the characteristics of effective learning, safeguarding, two-year-olds and the baby room. Learning from international approaches is one focus, with sessions on Froebel, Reggio Emilia and Montessori.
