- Practitioners need more sound guidance on the EYFS

Observation, assessment and planning is still the area of Early Years Foundation Stage practice that seems to cause the most worry and confusion among those working with young children.

It is perhaps not surprising, when such mixed messages are given out about the requirements of the EYFS. Early years consultant Margaret Edgington (see Letters page opposite) has written an open letter to Beverley Hughes, pointing out that the minister's own statements about the EYFS Profile being the only time that summative assessment is needed, are contradicted in the new Progress Matters guide and in how it is being interpreted by some local authorities.
