Opinion: Editor's view - Action is needed to ensure managers get on board with EYP Status

Is everyone ready for the Early Years Foundation Stage? Well, up to a point, as our survey of attitudes to the EYFS and Early Years Professionals carried out by The Consortium shows (see News, page 4).

More than two-thirds of respondents believed the EYFS would improve quality, and most had received some training on the new framework. However, the survey uncovers some real uncertainties about the EYP programme and an unwillingness to engage with it, which could mean problems with achieving the target of an EYP leading practice in every daycare setting.

Significant numbers are considering gaining EYP status but lack the entry qualifications required. More worrying are the one-third who say they are just not interested in becoming EYPs. Only a quarter agree that the entry qualifications for EYP are fair, with widespread concern that experience is not recognised.

The issue of how to give credit for experience has still not been tackled, and there is still a lack of clarity about where EYP Status fits with Qualified Teacher Status.

The survey points to the need for swift action to keep nursery managers engaged with EYP.

Back to A4

As you will see from our story on page 3, next week Nursery World returns to A4 size in response to our readers' wishes. We'll be keeping the cleaner, more professional look and the new structure linking to the EYFS principles, but we want our content to be as user-friendly (and folder-friendly) as possible. You told us that A4 was really important - and we've listened to you!
