Child Safety Week 2009, from 22 to 28 June, has as its theme 'SaferTogether'. Nurseries have a unique role to play in getting accidentprevention messages across to children in a fun way, so that they reallylearn, rather than just being able to parrot safety messages. Teachingchildren about concepts such as near and far, fast and slow all helpthem to build the skills they will need to stay safer as they grow.
Of course this isn't an exercise in wrapping children up in cotton wool. There's no doubt that the knocks and scrapes of life are what helpchildren to develop and to understand their physical capabilities. Thechallenge for nurseries, teachers and parents is finding the balancebetween allowing children the space to test their physical abilitieswhile creating a safe environment for them to do this within.
