Without an appropriate emphasis on technology in learning from an early age, there is the risk of a digital underclass developing, lacking opportunities and knowledge to make wide-ranging use of technology.
The publication of the Rose Review was welcome news. It recommends that computer and technology skills should move to centre stage alongside English, maths and personal skills in an overhaul of England's primary curriculum.
Becta believes that technology should be built into all subjects to support teaching and enhance children's development. We recommended to Jim Rose that not only should the curriculum include an increased emphasis on skills in using technology, but also for children to get a deeper understanding of how to utilise these skills for their own learning - not just the skills to use Google but how to make sense of the results of their search.
