Schools and maintained nurseries currently have a duty to 'promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development' of children under the Education Act 2002.
Mental health is not specifically addressed, and there currently no statutory guidance for schools to inform how they discharge this duty. Campaign groups say that as a result, not all children benefit from effective provision at school to promote their wellbeing and good mental health.
The first reading took place on 6 July. This stage is a formality that signals the start of the Bill's journey through the Lords.
The second reading - the general debate on all aspects of the Bill - is yet to be scheduled.
