Learning and development: First books

Tucking In! Just like me by Jess Stockham Child's Play (International), 4.99 each

Part of the delightful 'Just Like Me' series, Tucking In! won the Baby Book award at this year's Booktrust Early Years Awards. Completing the series are Feeling Great!, On The Go!, and Looking Good!, which was also shortlisted.

Babies and very young children will delight in lifting the flaps in these chunky board books to discover the feelings, features, abilities and tastes that they share with an array of animals and birds. In Tucking In!, baby likes oats - just like mouse; in Looking Good!, baby has floppy ears - just like elephant.

The themes and charming drawings are sure to engage the attention of the very young and provide lots of scope for adult-child interaction.

Happy Baby, by Dr Miriam Stoppard, Dorling Kindersley, £5.99

Also shortlisted for this year's Booktrust Baby Book Award, Happy Baby is a gloriously colourful book exploring children's feelings. Photographs of toy rabbits appear opposite an excited baby framed with a polka-dot blue and pink border. Sad teddy and boy are set against vivid yellow and green. The book comes with a sparkly mirror and fold-out notes for parents on child development.

Baby Touch: Noisy Book, Baby Touch: Peekaboo Book, by Justine Smith, illustrated by Fiona Land, Ladybird, £7.99

Both these titles from Ladybird's Baby Touch series made it on to the shortlist for Booktrust's Baby Book Award. Noisy Book comes with tactiles, a bell and a sound button for noisy fun and interactive play, while Peekaboo incorporates different textures with large integrated flaps for playing a peekaboo game.
