‘I worked in a very diverse school where the population spoke almost 50 different languages,’ says the author, a professor of literacy at Dublin City University. ‘Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the task of teaching them to read and write, but I found by focusing on meaningful contexts, the children thrived.’ How to create meaning and plan for this takes up two chapters of the book, while concepts such as phonological awareness and phonics are explored in depth, along with comprehension, guided reading, fine motor development and the role of play.
