The Giant Carrot

by Allan Manham and Penny Dann, Orchard Books, hardback, 10.99

In this humorous take on the traditional tale The Giant Turnip, a friend, children and animals all join Jack, the excellent gardener, in his attempts to pull up a huge carrot. In this version, a huge sneeze, rather than the little mouse, shoots the carrot out of the ground, and at the end they all settle down to a bowl of carrot soup.

The illustrations are fun and effective, with large drawings across a full page (or pages) working well alongside lots of small images detailing every step in the story.
