Young Children Learning Through Schemas

By Katey Mairs and the Pen Green Team; edited by Cath Arnold (Routledge, 21.99, ISBN 9780415697323)

The Pen Green team defines a schema as a pattern of repeatable behaviour into which a child's experiences are assimilated and are gradually co-ordinated. Co-ordinations lead to higher level and more powerful schemas. Here they provide insights into the ways in which planning for children's learning on the basis of closely observing their schemas leads to a 'rich and deep experience for the child'. Chapters include a variety of observations of young children at home, in nursery and in groups with their parents or carers.
