Diary of a headteacher: An outsider’s view…

While speaking with a visiting overseas educator, our headteacher diarist is struck by their view of the English education system

I was asked recently about what I thought of the English education system and I found it really difficult to give a concise and straight answer. The question came from a friend of a friend who I was meeting for the first time.

Our mutual friend is a headteacher in a successful international school in the middle east and had invited one of his colleagues over to England to visit schools and learn about our education system. My friend introduced me to this gentleman, explaining I was the headteacher of an English comprehensive secondary school, we shook hands and he said: “Pleased to meet you, so what do you think of the English education system?”
