Diary of a headteacher: Fair finance?

When schools are scraping to get by and face severe consequences for poor financial management, it seems deeply unfair that the DfE and EFA are wasting thousands on failing schools...

Last week in this column, I explored some of the challenges facing headteachers in relation to the financial management of schools and the way in which schools are funded (http://bit.ly/2i6Pl7b).

My over-riding reflections were that headteachers receive an inadequate amount of training and support in preparation for the huge levels of accountability that come with managing multi-million pound budgets of public money. Heads are faced with a sink or swim situation and the price of getting things wrong is a heavy one.

We are hugely reliant on the strategic direction for finances that an effective business manager can provide. In fact, a great business manager will take away the distraction of anything that isn’t “student-facing” so that the headteacher and leadership team can devote themselves almost entirely to raising education standards and student outcomes.
