Diary of a headteacher: Inspiring the next generation

Statistics on the age of headteachers in his area has got our headteacher diarist thinking about what he is doing to encourage the next generation of school leaders

I met with someone recently who showed me some statistics on the age of headteachers in our local authority and he outlined his concerns about where the next generation of heads was coming from.
He said that there are plenty of school leaders out there who could become heads but there simply aren’t enough who want to.

I know plenty of heads who say they had absolutely no intention becoming a head when they started out, or even when they entered senior leadership roles and I wonder whether we are doing enough as a profession to create the next generation of headteachers.

I think I am one of the few (strange) individuals who started a teaching career with the intention of becoming a headteacher, but then again I also knew I wanted to become a PE teacher when I was about 13-years-old, so I guess I have always had a clear idea about the career path I wanted to pursue.
