Diary of a headteacher: Squeaky bum time

Like many others, our headteacher diarist is dreading the prospect of losing key members of teaching staff as the education ‘transfer deadline’ looms

May 31 has become a date in the academic year that I really loathe. I imagine football managers feel the same way about transfer deadline days in August and January – the time of year when you might lose some of the most important and influential members of the team.

Sir Alex Ferguson famously described the culmination of the football season as “squeaky bum time” and in coining this phrase he successfully encapsulated how school leaders feel at this time of year.

Naturally, as we head into the business end of the academic year the levels of pressure crank up for headteachers as well as for everyone else working in secondary schools.
