Diary of an NQT: The staffroom stress-buster

Our NQT diarist reflects on how her relationships with fellow teachers have helped her to manage stress and safeguard her sanity in this first year of teaching

I remember being warned as a student teacher: “Stay away from the staffroom – it’s a festering pool of negativity and cliquey politics.”
Of course, I completely ignored them and settled into my spot in the (unofficial) “hums corner”.

This corner is a mix of humanities, art and PE staff all under the age of 35. On good days we talk about the weekend, nights out and holidays past and future. On bad days conversations start to get a little sour...

While lunch in the staffroom is supposed to be a relaxing break from work, on these bad days I can often leave feeling more stressed than when I entered.
