New formula is not ‘fair funding’

Malcolm Trobe outlines six key things that must happen if we are to tackle the funding crisis

The new school funding formula is a welcome step in addressing the inconsistencies in the current system, but it cannot be described as fair funding if it just involves shifting around an inadequate pot of money. ASCL has set out some principles over funding which we believe are essential:

As we await the production of the second consultation on the national funding formula schools have to deal with the reality of the current budget position. With funding per-pupil frozen and significant additional costs, such as increases to employer National Insurance and pension contributions, this is a significant real-terms cut. Some comments on social media suggest that some schools have come to the conclusion that this means having to set a deficit budget. This is very concerning.
