It encourages schools to self-evaluate their monitoring of students’ use of school devices online and offline, in school and outside of the school environment. It asks how effective your monitoring practice is and offers key questions and issues to consider when reviewing your provision.
It looks at how schools can use the digital environment to look for the subtle early warning signs of students who are struggling with a range of issues or facing immediate dangers or threats – whether that be mental health issues or radicalisation, cyber-bullying, child sexual exploitation, gang violence or other dangers.
The guide outlines the statutory obligations for schools, including under the Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance and the Prevent Duty. It also discusses the nuances of students’ language and how the most innocuous phrases can sometimes be a sign of a serious or emerging issue. The guide also includes a case study of one school's practice.
